Comments on social media have been restricted to \u201crest in peace\u201d (\u5b89\u606f\u5427 \u0101nx\u00ed ba) and other similar formulaic expressions. It&#8217;s thought to be one of the oldest forms of poetry. Originally used for funeral songs by the ancient Greeks, the elegiac couplet is also commonly used in English, Chinese, and other languages. In Chinese, the couplet is often used to mark someone&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>The line \u201cIn death he was wronged\u201d is drawn from a famous line by M\u00e1o Z\u00e9d\u014dng \u6bdb\u6cfd\u4e1c:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A life of greatness that ends in a glorious death<\/p>\n<p><em>\u751f\u5f97\u4f1f\u5927\uff0c\u6b7b\u5f97\u5149\u8363<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sh\u0113ng de w\u011bid\u00e0, s\u01d0 de gu\u0101ngr\u00f3ng<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He wrote it on March 26, 1947, in tribute to the Communist Party martyr Li\u00fa H\u00fal\u00e1n \u5218\u80e1\u5170.<\/p>\n<p>Liu Hulan was a young female spy during the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. She joined the Communist Party after defecting from the Nationalists in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>On January 12, 1947, the Kuomintang army invaded her village. Soldiers rounded up several reputed Communist Party members, including 14-year-old Liu Hulan, and butchered them in the village square. Before Liu was killed, she was given one final chance to renounce her allegiance to the Communist Party. She refused and was beheaded.<\/p>\n<p>Three months later, when Mao visited her village on a tour of Shaanxi Province, he was moved by the story of her bravery, and so inscribed \u201cA life of greatness that ends in a glorious death\u201d in her memory.<\/p>\n<p>Wu Guoguang&#8217;s elegiac couplet is a bitter play on words, drawing from the greatness of Liu Hulan&#8217;s martyrdom, and giving us our fascinating but tragic phrase of the week in memory of China&#8217;s late premier, which we translate as the following eight-character phrase:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lived in frustration, and died in vain.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u6d3b\u5f97\u618b\u5c48\uff0c\u6b7b\u5f97\u7a9d\u56ca\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hu\u00f3 de bi\u0113q\u016b, s\u01d0 de w\u014dnang.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>With thanks to Geremie R.
