{"id":279010,"date":"2023-07-13T09:01:24","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T13:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/?p=279010"},"modified":"2023-07-13T09:03:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T13:03:43","slug":"editors-note-for-july-13-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/2023\/07\/13\/editors-note-for-july-13-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Editor\u2019s note for July 13, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dear reader: <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Chinese government is again signaling an end to its <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/2021\/09\/09\/chinas-red-new-deal-a-guide-to-all-the-different-crackdowns-on-companies-going-on-right-now\/\">internet company crackdown<\/a> that began in earnest with the <a href=\"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/2020\/11\/03\/ant-group-ipo-suspended-after-jack-ma-criticizes-regulators\/\">suspension in November 2020<\/a> of the IPO of Alibaba affiliate Ant Group:<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s No. 2 official, premier L\u01d0 Qi\u00e1ng \u674e\u5f3a, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20230712\/e0de5e2445804023a6abfb02dff00713\/c.html\">yesterday<\/a> held a meeting with executives from nearly a dozen Chinese internet companies, where he said that the \u201cplatform economy\u201d (i.e. large internet companies) had done the following good things for China:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boosted demand;<\/li>\n<li>Provided an engine for innovation and development;<\/li>\n<li>Created new channels for employment and entrepreneurship;<\/li>\n<li>Offered support for public services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He added that \u201cthe platform economy had taken an increasingly prominent position in China&#8217;s overall development,\u201d and \u201cwould have a more significant role as the country embarks on a new journey to build itself into a modern socialist country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is quite a change of tune, and a sign of how worried the central government is about the economy and the timidity of the animal spirits of investors and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile the Cyberspace Administration of China today finalized <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/13\/china-introduces-rules-governing-generative-ai-services-like-chatgpt.html\">rules to govern generative artificial intelligence<\/a>.
