{"id":275693,"date":"2023-06-01T14:22:44","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T18:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/?p=275693"},"modified":"2023-10-05T00:08:37","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T04:08:37","slug":"between-black-white-asian-americans-speak-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/2023\/06\/01\/between-black-white-asian-americans-speak-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Between Black &#038; White: Asian Americans Speak Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sericainitiative.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Serica Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our sister nonprofit, in collaboration with The WNET Group\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring Hate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, PBS&#8217;s flagship station in New York, has produced a new digital series called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sericainitiative.org\/aapi\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversation about race in America is often between Black and White, leaving Asian Americans out of the dialogue. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/exploring-hate\/series\/between-black-white-asian-americans-speak-out\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a three-part series about communities building bridges, confronting racism, discovering surprising connections, and fighting hate \u2013 together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-wrap video-rt video-provider-youtube\"><span class=\"embed-container embed-video embed-rt embed-provider-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out | Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/02R9Ux8VI1U?list=PLNQ4hd2ciU_qAbmnvJez88TrwupBpv-Gs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first episode, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/exploring-hate\/video\/bridging-the-divide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Bridging the Divide,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> profiles Eddie Zheng, who spent 21 years behind bars in California for a crime he committed at age 16. Now he\u2019s committed to building bridges \u2014 and bridging the divide between Asian Americans and other communities of color. But he\u2019s not doing it alone. In one San Francisco neighborhood, Blacks and Asian Americans are working together to confront racism, fear, and misperceptions about one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-wrap video-rt video-provider-youtube\"><span class=\"embed-container embed-video embed-rt embed-provider-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eddie Zheng: Bridging the Divide | Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HznlI6SvPhE?list=PLNQ4hd2ciU_qAbmnvJez88TrwupBpv-Gs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second episode, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/exploring-hate\/video\/a-seat-at-the-table\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A Seat at the Table,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about a community of young Asian American Jews who didn\u2019t fit in, so they spoke out. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Seat at the Table<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serves up inspiration from Asian American Jews embracing identity, becoming more visible, and standing against hate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-wrap video-rt video-provider-youtube\"><span class=\"embed-container embed-video embed-rt embed-provider-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Lunar Collective: A Seat at the Table | Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m8U2GIQfzdI?list=PLNQ4hd2ciU_qAbmnvJez88TrwupBpv-Gs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third and final episode, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/exploring-hate\/video\/from-kingston-jamaica-to-jamaica-queens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, Queens,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> profiles Patricia \u201cMiss Pat\u201d Chin, the godmother of Jamaican music, who revolutionized the reggae music business as the co-founder of VP Records, the largest independent reggae record label in the world. Reflecting the diversity of the Asian American community, her story is rooted in Asian Caribbean history, and at 85 years old, she is still making music.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-wrap video-rt video-provider-youtube\"><span class=\"embed-container embed-video embed-rt embed-provider-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"From Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, Queens | Between Black &amp; White: Asian Americans Speak Out\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R3Aci2D1wlM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new series builds off Serica\u2019s first successful collaboration with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring Hate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/belonging-asian-americans-now\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cbe\/longing: Asian Americans Now,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which profiled prominent Asian Americans in five stories about standing up, speaking out, and confronting hate, including Star Trek actor George Takei; CityMD Founder and former CEO Richard Park; and Pulitzer-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen, and released in conjunction with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ginakimfilms.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gina Kim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s one-hour special, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/rising-against-asian-hate-one-day-march\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRising Against Asian Hate: One Day in March\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/2023\/06\/01\/between-black-white-asian-americans-speak-out\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-275755 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1-1200x784.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1-1200x784.png 1200w, https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1-500x326.png 500w, https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1-768x501.png 768w, https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1-1536x1003.png 1536w, https:\/\/thechinaproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Between-Black-and-White-1.png 1654w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the launch, on June 6, 7 p.m. ET\/4 p.m. PT, in collaboration with The WNET Group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/exploring-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Exploring Hate<\/em><\/a> initiative, The Serica Initiative is hosting a virtual discussion spotlighting the challenges and opportunities Asian Americans face as they build coalitions with other communities, races, and religions.
